Card is king! SA is basically cash less – and cash is only needed for the odd thing, such as tipping in public parking areas where ‘car guards’ will watch your car for you or for petrol attendants. Gratuity at restaurants is mostly not included in the price, we recommend tipping between 10-15%. You can buy a sim card at the airport, this is the easiest option. SA is currently experiencing ‘load shedding’ (controlled power outages), download the app ‘EskomSePush’ for load shedding timings. P.S. You can drink the tap water in CT but not in Knysna.

  • weather

December is South Africa’s summer time. Daytime temperatures often vary from anything between 25°C to mid-30s. Make sure to layer up on sun screen as the sun is very strong. Pack easy summer clothes and bring along extra layers - jacket/jumper/jeans for evenings as the temperatures can drop quite a bit.

  • areas to stay in

When visiting Cape Town you want to be as close to the city as possible. Here are a few of our favourite areas that we would recommend staying in and around of - Green Point, Sea Point, Fresnaye, Camps Bay, Bakoven, Gardens, Oranjezicht, Kloof Street and Tamboerskloef.

  • getting around

Uber is a safe, reliable and affordable transportation option. MyCiti Bus is also a good local bus option. Renting a car opens up A LOT for you when heading out of Cape Town. Here are some good car rental options: Tempest, Avis, Woodford, Europcar.

  • safety

South Africa doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to crime. We always say it’s good to just be extra street wise - don’t walk around at night, don’t wear flashy jewellery in public due to snatch and grabs, keep an eye on your belongings etc. If you’d like any more specific info on e.g. where not to drive at night/what neighbourhoods are safe to walk around in - let us know!
